Asking Questions

10 Sep

Mark and I love when we get the chance to Facetime with our grandkids. They all have a different communication styles and phone etiquette which makes perfect sense; because they all have different personalities.

Sometimes the phone call consists of them carrying around the phone while they show me their room or something they are doing. Sometimes I watch them bake cookies or show me how to apply makeup.

But one particular call with one of our grandsons caught me off-guard. We talked for a while about sports and school and then he paused and asked me a question.

After the call, I texted our son; “Do you coach your boys to ask us questions when we are on a phone call or do they do that on their own?” He replied; “We tell the boys that when they are having conversation with people; it’s a great habit to always try to ask people questions that they would like to answer.”

Ask people questions that they would like to answer. What great advice, what a great way to get to know someone better, and what a great way to carry on a conversation with someone you care about.

On the other hand, I have started a new habit of having discipline to NOT to ask every question that comes to mind when I am talking to someone. I am a curious person and I always have followup questions when someone is telling a story. But, some of those questions are not necessary and can be annoying to the person telling the story or others who are listening.

I internally ask myself, do I really need the answer this question? Just because I am curious doesn’t always mean that it’s important information for me to know. Just because I think it, doesn’t mean I need to say it.

Anyway…It has worked for me.
